heron detterent Can't Post

Hi,
My pond has just had its second visit from a heron two mornings in a row so drastic action was needed. I went out and bought the scarecrow heron deterrent which works on a sensor and blasts the heron with water. It seems to work ok BUT its leaking out water from the top seal where the hose is attatched. Does this mean I need some sort of guage to lower the water pressure coming from the tap to the hose? Has anyone else had this problem. Any tips out there?

Hi, is the attachment to the heron a 'hoselock' snap on type device or a screw on attachment. If it is the first check to see the attachment is properly fitted to the end of your hose and check the rubber seal is intact on the male part of the attachment. If it is a screw fitting, is there a washer present and if so is it OK. A friend of mine who lives half a mile from me has had visits from herons, he found putting fishining wire around the edge of his pond about 18 inches off the ground detered them from harming his fish. I have one of those big lifelike crocodiles you can buy from most garden centers lying right next to my pond and this, up to now, has detered both herons & cats. Hope this is of help

Hi, thanks for your help. I actually ended up getting in touch with the company who manufacter the scarecrow and they told me they had a faulty batch which had a defective washer. We have since changed this and, fingers crossed, it seems to have worked. I have a net over the pond but thats a good idea about the crocodile. My problem is that I live in between a canal and a heron sanctuary!!!Frown Not an ideal location for a koi pond hey?

Sly I was reading over the forum and read this and thought oh my god, you are a determined person! I use a gator head and a sensor pest sprayer like yours. So far so good. I had a heron who had rooted at my pond and that took care of that. How have you been doing with keeping the herons away. ... cuda

Once I tried too hard to control things in the pond....the frogs left.

I haven't seen any herons at my pond, but my neighbour, she is visited by herons all the time. Because of this, she lose 36 koi in the past 5 years, and ended up having to buy a rifle that shoots rubber shells. Not lethal enough to kill a person, but i've seen her fire that thing at birds and racoons...etc. I have to admit it, it was scary!Sly (LOL) I mean, what is she kills a bird or coon or something, she has to pick it up. She has less visits now, maybe the animals learned their lesson.

In the UK this is the time of year when we get alot of herons - I guess they are looking for easy pickings! They usually come round early in the morning but I recently had one at my pond at 3 in the afternoon! The net is a good deterrent as unfortunatley I cant always have my sensor on as you are not supposed to use it in freezing conditions!! They are a protected species in the UK so we are not allowed to shoot them(!)

Re: [s_clan] heron detterent [In reply to] Can't Post

apparantly raising ur pond can deter herons, mine is 18 inch above ground level and 3-3.5 feet deep.

i have another pond at the other end of the pond with a metal heron next to it, solitary animals when they hunt/feed i guess so this could put it off.

there is a purgola over both ponds that streches the length of the garden on the side where the ponds are, along with one over the patio on other side of the garden, this can also deter them i think, i also have netting over the purgols above the bigger pond.
