winter for koi Can't Post

Hi
Could use some advice on wintering the koi, I am unsure when to turn off the pump and when to stop feeding. I have changed the food to wheatgerm food as they dont seem too interested in the usual food at the moment.

You're supposed to turn off your pump/filters over winter?????
Surely that just causes water problems?

The chart is based on water temperature. Since koi are not interested in food when the water is cold filtration is a waste of time and electricity. It can be beneficial to keep a pump circulating water in the pond as the motor does generate a small amount of heat, but fish waste goes to near zero so.... Besides, the bacteria in the biomedia either die or go dormant (depending upon how cold it gets) and provide no benefit. Oxygen is still a must, so it is a good idea to have an airstone running in the pond. Some ponders run a small fountain to keep an airhole open just in case of a frost.

NEVER switch off your pumps/filters in the winter. Its vital you switch off a water fall. If you have one then by-pass it. A pond still needs filtration and circulation during the winter, aswell as adequate aeration, depending on your stock levels. There will still be toxins in the water that will need to be removed via a filter - plus the circulation will help stop your pond from freezing over. In the UK i will switch to a wheatgerm based food around the November period. Many people differ in opinions on when to stop feeding. Fish struggle to digest food when the water temperature drops below 9 degrees C and also NO chemical treatments should be applied when the water temperature is below 10 degress C. I personally stop feeding when the temperature reaches 9-10 degrees C, and will start again slowly when they reach the same levels. Again, this is down to personal preference and each individual with differ in choice.

I would recommend covering the pond with something, bubble-wrap is a good material. This will help reduce fluctuations of the water temperature which is not good for the fish. Remember to always leave an opening for oygen to be passed into the pond or the fish will suffocate.

If you have a good flow rate through your filtration system, you should aviod the pipe work freezing over - always worth checking everything on a regular basis anyway.

Good luck

I've also covered my 6000 gallon pond in the past with bubblewrap over a frame. However the weather has been so mild this year not only have I not covered it up but I've had to turn my UV on this weekend as the water has gone green. I've just bought a last couple of sturgeon that do well in cold water and feed all year round so don't worry about feeding, if the fish want food a good quality wheatgerm (like Hikari) is easily digested and can be fed down to 5 degrees. However koi still eat sturgeon food which is about 50 % protein and it doesn't seem to do them any harm as long as you don't overfeed.
Keep filters running, turn off waterfalls so the water doesn't chill excessively and return water to the pond below water level.

The weather has been so mild lately I'm about to treat the blanket weed as it keeps blocking my filter!!! As it lookslike staying mild for the rest of Jan I just hope Feb and March doesn't get any colder or I'll have to bypass my UV again...
